Bangin Beats With C-Lance
Exclusive Interview With Enemy Soil Producer
1. Introduce yourself to the readers who may not be familiar with C-Lance.
First off, I’m 24 years old…Born and raised in Boston, MA. I am the In-House Producer for Enemy Soil Records Which is Vinnie Paz’s label. The Hip Hop world will know my name from the songs I produced on Vinnie Paz’s “Season of the Assassin” record & The Heavy Metal Kings Record with ILL BILL & Vinnie Paz. Current Projects I am working on, Well, The New Jedi Mind Trick’s album drops October 25th…I did 4 songs on that, Working on Vinnie Paz’s new album “God of the Serengeti” Jus Allah’s new album “Meanest Man Alive” which will be entirely produced by me. ILL BILL’s new solo record, La Coka Nostra EP, as well as working on beats for the next Heavy Metal Kings Record. Plus I got some good stuff coming with R.A. The Rugged Man & Diabolic.
Alkota: JMT/AOTP/Enemy Soil and their extended family are an independent music powerhouse with global reach and influence.
2. How did you land an in house production gig with Enemy Soil?
It All happened my senior year in college, I never was even into making music growing up. My High School days was all about playing sports, but then I just started making beats for fun. I would sit in my college dorm room every night and make beats while everyone else was out partying and having a good time, but, to me, making beats was what I wanted to do. And then ONE day I just woke up and had a email from Vinnie Paz…of course being a huge fan of JMT and AOTP, I didnt believe it, I thought it was some creep pretending to be him haha, but It was Paz and he said he herd my beats from Doap Nixon, Who I previously sent some beats to and Vinnie loved what he herd. Me and Vinnie kept building just through emails and we immediately built a good friendship and he loved my work ethic. Our sounds just connect and about 3 months later I was apart of Enemy Soil.
3. Is making music your 9-5 or is it still a hobby/part time gig?
Making music is my full time job. I mean of course growing up and in college before I was making beats full time I had the dreadful summer jobs doing things I hated, but it was something I had to do to make some money. Honestly the thing that has gotten me to where I am today, is work ethic and dedication. Ask Vinnie Paz, Jus Allah & ILL BILL who sends them the most beats. They will tell you me. Thats why I can do this as a full time job. I feel if I go ONE day with out making a beat, that day was a failure, and I just let someone else take a placement from me. The upside about doing this as a full time job, of course is you have so much time to work on music, perfecting your sound and landing the most beats on albums. The downside of course is, there isnt any weekly or monthly check like a 9-5 job would give you, It’s all about how much work you put in and how many placements you get. But if you work hard, many many placements will come, with lots of money.
4. Whats your current production setup consist of?
Right now I am using a Yamaha Motif Keyboard Xs7. In my opinion that’s the best machine to use for cutting up samples. Why limit yourself to the 10 squares on a mpc or what ever that has when I can chop a sample into 76 keys. I run my keyboard through a program called FL Studio. I LOVE it because its simple and I have mastered it and I have mastered my sound through the program. You don’t need the best equipment to make dope beats. Think about this, If you stick Alchemist in front of pots and pans and then you stick a horrible producer in front of the greatest equipment, ALC would STILL make the better beat, Its about talent, not the technology.
Alkota: Your signature sound is sample heavy, epic, go hard type joints with tons of energy. Your music has a unique sound/mood that most producers fail to capture when making beats.
5. Run us through a day in the life of C-Lance.
Man, my beatmaking workflow is insane. I make at least 2 beats a day. If I don’t make any, I look at that day as a lost placement I would have had, that I just gave to another producer. My inspiration for making so many beats, is based all on that I want to be the biggest name on every album as far as placements. I want the fans and listeners to see C-Lance under the production credits MORE than anyone else. As far as shopping my beat, I don’t do much shopping, I work mostly with family. Every single beat I make, gets sent to Vinnie Paz, ILL BILL or Jus Allah. As far as picking which one it goes too, It’s usually the sound of the beat or which albums we are working on, Right now ALL 3 of them are working on new albums, So I gotta work extra hard, Making sure all 3 of them get a new beat from me every day. My spare time, I just spend my spare time with my fiance Anna. I work so hard on my music and She works extremely hard every day being a cosmetician. In my spare time I love to just spend time with her and enjoy the night watching Movies, Playing Video games and just Hanging out.
Alkota: Almost every well known hip hop producer has given away free beats at some point in order to build their catalog/discography and advance their career.
6. Have you hooked up joints on the strength to build relationships and buzz?
Of course I have done that, It’s all about building relationships and friendships in this business. I have built a great friendship with Paz, Jus and Bill. I talk to them almost every day. But yeah of course I have given beats to certain artists just to build a relationship or even get a trade for a verse if I ever need one for my own Producer album one day. I mean, also for buzz, It’s good as a producer to give a artist beats for free that will excel there career. You have to look at it this way, If you give say…Eminem free beats, when those songs come out…EVERYONE will know who you are…and that will lead to thousands of artists asking you for beats, which will lead to thousands of dollars. Sometimes you gotta do things for free, to get money, if that makes sense.
7. Do you exclusively use samples in all of your beats or are you knocking out original sample free beats?
I do both, I think as a producer, You have to do both, You have to keep changing it up and reinventing yourself. If you keep making the same sounding beats over and over, fans will lose interest in you. I use samples most of the time, but I do make the occasional original beat. Actually, some of the songs that have been released have been Original, But I’ll let the fans try to figure out which songs those are. Thats the key, Making your original beats, sound like samples. I perfer sampling, I think that’s the art of underground hip hop, dirty-raw beats. Flipping samples. As far as sample clearance, We don’t have any issues with that. That’s only if you sample Michael Jackson. Plus, I chop my samples up a lot, and I make them sound totally different than the original loop. Which is the fun part of sampling.
8. When can we expect a C-Lance Instrumental Album?
Haha, It’s been talked about. I have talked to Paz & Jus about it. It’s coming, I’ll be honest I haven’t started on it yet, because I’m so busy working on everyone’s album. One day it will come, But it wont be a instrumental album, It will be a producer record, something similar to the alchemist albums. All my beats with a bunch of different artists. I have always wanted to do it, I just gotta build my name up even more and build more relationships. A C-Lance Producer album will happen, and it will be a classic.
9. Your drum sounds are hard! Do you sample your own drum samples or use producer libraries/kits?
Drums are the most important part of my beats. I LOVE hard big sounding drums and that’s why you hear them in all my beats. I create my own drums, and I also use drums from old Vinyl Records. Paz sent me a bunch of Vinyl Drums as well. As a Producer who focus’s on drums though, You have to take the drums and then put them through filters and EQ’s to make them sound how you want them. I don’t want to give away tips of how I make my drums sound how they do, but I put them through a bunch of filters to make them pop and sound hard and loud. The drums are what makes the listener nod there heads. If you have hard sounding drums, thats what is going to catch the listener AND the artist. When I send beats to Vinnie, He will always comment on the drums…like…I LOVE this snare, or I HATE this kick. its all about the drums, and then we work together to perfect the sound of the drums to both of our likings. You can have the greatest sample in the world, or the greatest melody, But you NEED those big hard hitting drums to grab the listener by the throat.
10. Where do you see yourself in 5 years with your music and career? Do you feel like producing hip hop music has a shelf life?
In 5 years, I see myself being on top of the Hip Hop World. I see myself as being the Number 1 producer that when every artist is about to start a new album, they come to me for a beat on there album. I see myself having numerous classic songs and albums under my belt with Paz, Jus, And Bill. I see my beats being A LOT better, and Probably having some different sounds in my music. In 5 years, I definitely want to be looked at as one of the most respected producers in Hip Hop, and I think I am on my way. Producing Hip Hop music never will die. It’s a Artform, Art doesn’t die, Music Doesn’t Die, The fans need music. I personally think underground hip hop is bigger than ever, and its going to continue to grow and become even larger. Hip Hop will never sit on the shelf, I will continue to make the best songs I can make for ALL the fans.
11. What projects are you working on for the end of 2011/Early 2012?
Man where do I even begin. For the end of 2011, I’m Working on beats for ILL BILL on a new La Coka Nostra EP. Right now, All my time and dedication goes into the albums for Vinnie Paz, Jus Allah and ILL BILL. All three of them have albums coming out in 2012, And I’m working every day to land the most beats on all of them, Well Minus the Jus record, Because I’m doing the whole thing. Also Working on beats for the ILL BILL & Sean Price album “The Pill” which will be incredible. I have 2 big songs coming out on R.A. The Rugged Man’s album. Those will be huge for my career, and I got some big songs with Diabolic for his album. We are also putting beats aside for the Next Heavy Metal Kings album. Its mostly all in house though, I stick with working with my friends and the people I know and trust, thats the best part about what I do.
12. I know C-Lance has beats for sale! How can artists and labels interested in working with you hear your beats and contact you?
I’m probably one of the ONLY producers who doesn’t put their beats on the internet. I just don’t like doing that. I keep everything private. For artists who want to work with me and purchase some beats, they have to contact info@jmthipop.com The artists will just contact my manager and then everything happens privately. Thats how I like to do things.
13. Any last shout outs or thoughts on the music industry?
Man, I got a lot of people to shout out. Well first off, My beautiful fiance Anna, Who is always there supporting me and being my number 1 fan. Sometimes I get carried away with making music and I over work myself, but she keeps me sane, I don’t know what I would do with out her. My family back home in Boston. My mom, Dad, my brother Mike, Thanks for everything that you guys have done for me. My brother Vinnie Paz. I cant thank him enough for what he has done for me and the position he has put me in to succeed in this industry, He’s done a lot for everyone in this industry, he needs some sort of award for ALL the careers he has made. A Big shout out to Jus Allah, Another good friend I have made, I can’t wait for the world to hear his album. ILL BILL, for everything he has done for me as well, Look for his album to be a classic. Shout outs to Crypt The Warchild & Planetary of OuterSpace. My good friends Brian and Jeff, My man Sicko who is the funniest person on earth, All my AOTP brothers, La Coka Nostra, Diabolic, R.A. The Rugged Man, My Manager Yan and ALL the fans, Thanks you for everything. If I forgot anyone, well, better luck next time.
